New Addiction Center in Muncie Expands CleanSlate’s Leadership of Medication-Assisted Treatment in Indiana
Nov 02
Muncie, IN – CleanSlate Centers, a national leader in outpatient addiction medicine, has added to its significant presence in Indiana with a new medication-assisted treatment center in Muncie. The physician-operated office, which marks the company’s tenth center in Indiana, opened its doors to patients by appointment or walk-in this week.
CleanSlate’s decision to open a center in Muncie was a direct response to heavy demand from the company’s patients in nearby Anderson and Alexandria, some of whom live closer to Muncie. More than 100 patients in the Anderson office requested to be transferred to the Muncie center.
“There have only been a few options for treatment in Delaware County for some time now,” said Cory McConnell, an Expansion Business Partner for CleanSlate. “We have seen hundreds of patients in the Muncie area drive to our centers in Fort Wayne, Anderson and other areas because of a lack of availability to timely treatment. We are removing barriers to accessing quality treatment in the towns where our patients live and work.”
“The Muncie opening demonstrates our core value of ‘Patients First,’” said Julie Clifton, Center Manager in Muncie. “Transportation is a big deal for patients, and it’s a hardship for them to commute 30 minutes or more to get to appointments. Recovery happens at home. If we are going to equip patients to live the lives they want and deserve, we must try to meet them where they are at, in their hometowns.”
Over the past decade since its inception, CleanSlate has treated more than 35,000 patients, with 11,000 patients currently being treated across 50 centers nationwide. The company’s program of care includes appropriate medication-assisted treatment (MAT) prescribed by licensed medical providers, as well as clear accountability, supportive counseling and care coordination. CleanSlate is actively growing its footprint to expand much-needed access to outpatient medication treatment for addiction.
Indiana has been a particular focus for CleanSlate, with treatment centers in Bloomington, Elkhart, Evansville, E. Indianapolis, N. Indianapolis, and Merrillville, along with Anderson, Alexandria and Fort Wayne. The company currently cares for nearly 2,000 patients in Indiana and has plans to open as many as nine more centers in the state through 2019.
Support from the Governor’s office to the grassroots level
CleanSlate has been welcomed by a wide range of community stakeholders and partners throughout the Indiana communities where the company operates. This includes support from the Executive Director for Drug Prevention, Treatment, and Enforcement for the State of Indiana, Jim McClelland, whose recommendations to the Governor this year included significantly improving access to effective, affordable treatment, with a preference for medication-assisted treatment (MAT). McClelland, who is referred to as Indiana’s “Drug Czar,” made a commitment to increase the number of Indiana Family and Social Services Administration (FSSA)-approved opioid treatment locations like CleanSlate so that Hoosiers have better access to treatment.
At the grand opening of CleanSlate’s center in E. Indianapolis earlier this year, McClelland endorsed CleanSlate’s approach to addiction treatment. “We’re going to make a serious dent in this epidemic and I’m confident of this,” he said at CleanSlate’s ribbon-cutting event. “And we have to do it in a whole lot less time than it took to create this crisis. We need timely access to medication-assisted treatment. We’ve been woefully short of that in the state. It’s been far easier to get high than it has been to get help.”
Easing the barrier of transportation
CleanSlate’s Muncie center is located in an a historic building that is ideally situated for patients, around the corner from the bus depot and adjacent to the Delaware County Health Department.
“The Muncie location is absolutely perfect,” said Rachael Thompson, CleanSlate’s Regional Director of Operations for Indiana. “The Health Department offers many services that complement our care coordination support. Patients who need immediate services like test results can simply walk next door. And with the proximity of the bus depot, transportation will not be an issue for our patients.”
“We have a seasoned staff in Muncie that has come from our other centers,” said Claudie Jimenez, M.D., a Regional Medical Director for CleanSlate. “We’re off and running at a fast clip, getting to know the community, and broadening our footprint with an East Central Indiana center that benefits the people not only in Delaware County but also in many surrounding areas. We’re excited to help Hoosiers in this area and make a real difference in their recovery.”
