CleanSlate Responds to San Antonio’s Heroin Epidemic with New Medication Treatment Center for Opioid and Alcohol Addictions
Apr 09
San Antonio TX – CleanSlate announced today the opening of its fourth Texas office-based outpatient medication treatment center to reach those suffering from opioid and alcohol addictions. The new center is CleanSlate’s first location in San Antonio and is located at 5282 Medical Drive, Suite 210, in the Westgate Medical Center.
Though San Antonio has not yet seen the tsunami of prescription opioid use and overdose deaths that have plagued other cities and towns across the country, the city has long struggled with heroin. Because of its proximity to Mexico, San Antonio is considered a “first cut” city, where heroin is strong and cheap.
San Antonio’s high poverty rates can set its citizens up for drug addiction even before they are born. In fact, one-third of all opioid addicted babies in Texas are born in San Antonio.
“San Antonio’s leaders are working to get ahead of the addiction epidemic in the general population and reduce the numbers of babies born with Neonatal Abstinence Syndrome, which can put newborns at risk for a number of developmental problems,” said Ned Pucek, President of Operations for CleanSlate’s Western Division. “We look forward to working with Mayor Ron Nuremberg’s administration and community partners to expand care for anyone who needs it in Bexar County.”
City leaders have established an Opioid Task Force to address ways to reduce overdose deaths, prevent addiction and boost access to treatment for those struggling with OUD, including pregnant women. The Opioid Task Force is made up of 20 stakeholders – doctors, emergency workers, dentists and policy makers. CleanSlate works closely with providers throughout the continuum of care to help patients receive medication treatment, which the Substance Abuse and Mental Health Administration recently stated should be offered to any patient suffering from opioid addiction.
“When a pregnant woman suffers from substance use disorder, the devastating consequences can extend to her unborn child,” said Nasser Hajaig, M.D., Western Division Medical Director for CleanSlate. “CleanSlate will fast-track any pregnant patient who seeks treatment, because we know that we’re treating two lives.”
CleanSlate’s program of care – which has been utilized to treat nearly 30,000 patients over the past nine years – includes appropriate medication treatment prescribed by licensed medical providers, clear accountability, and supportive counseling. With more than 8,000 active patients currently being treated in 42 centers across the country, the medical group is aggressively growing its national footprint to expand access to those in need of treatment.
