CleanSlate Increases Philadelphia’s Access to Medication Treatment for Opioid Addiction With Second New Center

Philadelphia, Penn. –  CleanSlate announced today the opening of its second office-based outpatient medication addiction treatment center in Philadelphia,’ in the Port Richmond neighborhood. This area is adjacent to Kensington, known as ground zero for Philadelphia’s heroin crisis.

The epicenter of Philadelphia’s addiction crisis, Kensington has the highest overdose rate of any major American city. The skyrocketing overdose rate in the area has propelled city leaders to propose a city-sanctioned safe injection site for those struggling with heroin addiction.

Located at 3380 Memphis Street, the new CleanSlate center is situated 1.3 miles from McPherson Park, where “drug tourists” are known to visit to obtain high- grade heroin.

“Philadelphia has an urgent need for expanded access to treatment for opioid and alcohol use disorders,” said Adam McPhee, President of the Eastern Division of Operations, CleanSlate. “We strategically placed the new center in the heart of Philadelphia’s opioid crisis, where we can do the most good and save the most lives. The CleanSlate team is eager to support Philadelphia Mayor Jim Kenney and other city and state leaders in battling the opioid epidemic together.”

Pennsylvania ranks sixth in the country in opioid-related overdose deaths and continues to struggle under the weight of the national crisis. Opioid-related hospital admissions have quadrupled since 2010. According to the Philadelphia Inquirer, an estimated 1,200 Philadelphians died from overdoses in 2017.

“We want everyone suffering from opioid or alcohol use disorders to know that we stand with them and are here to help them get their lives back,” said Maria Russo-Appel, M.D., Eastern Division Medical Director for CleanSlate. “We treat addiction as the chronic brain disease that it is, utilizing proven medication treatment that is the standard of medical care today.”

CleanSlate’s program of care – which has been used to treat nearly 27,000 patients over the past nine years  – includes appropriate medication treatment prescribed by licensed medical providers, clear accountability, and supportive counseling. With approximately 7,840 active patients currently being treated in 40 centers across the country, the medical group is aggressively growing its national footprint to expand access to those in need of treatment.
